Professor Christopher Greenwood

The Court's role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies.

The UK nominated candidate Professor Christopher Greenwood was elected on 6 November 2008, by both the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly, as one of five judges to sit on the International Court of Justice (ICJ), for a nine-year term commencing in 2009.

Professor Greenwood has extensive experience in International Law and has acted as Counsel before the ICJ, European Court of Human Rights, the Court of Justice of the European Communities and several international arbitral tribunals. He is also an academic of outstanding repute; Professor of International Law at the London School of Economics, co-editor of the International Law Reports, and a prolific scholar and author across the range of the discipline.

Professor Greenwood's candidacy, as an outstanding practitioner and academic of internaitonal law, reflects the UK's continued commitment to the Court and to the importance of the rule of law in the United Nations system and in the international community more generally.
