UN Security Council Mission to Africa - Chad
The Security Council arrived in Chad on 6 June. The delegation went to Abéché, in eastern Chad, where they were briefed by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Victor Angelo, and by the Force Commanders of the European Force (EUFOR) and the UN police mission (MINURCAT).
The mission also visited Goz Baide, near the Sudanese border, and met with the governor of the region before visiting a camp for refugees from Darfur and a camp for internally displaced Chadian persons. IDPs and refugees identified security and limited education resources as their main concerns.
Humanitarian workers at the camps also cited security concerns, as well as restrictions on their movement.
Regrettably, the Security Council delegation was unable to meet as planned with President Déby of Chad because of a scheduling conflict brought about by an unforeseen presidential trip abroad.
